EIA Caspian Sea Region (Report)
The Caspian Sea region is important to world markets because it has large oil and gas reserves that are only now beginning to be fully developed. Developing these resources has resulted in competition both between companies to get the contracts to develop this potential, and between nations to determine the final export routes. International Seabed Authority top
The International Seabed Authority is an autonomous international organization established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Authority is the organization through which States Parties to the Convention shall, in accordance with the regime for the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area) established in Part XI and the Agreement, organize and control activities in the Area, particularly with a view to administering the resources of the Area.

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Regional Programmes top

The IOC's regional subsidiary bodies are responsible for the promotion, development and co-ordination of the Commission's marine scientific research programmes, the ocean services, and related activities, including TEMA (training, education and mutual assistance), in their respective regions. In establishing their programmes, they take into account the specific interests and needs of the member States in the region.

IOC Ocean Mapping

IOC activities in international ocean mapping began in 1969 after the endorsement by the UN General Assembly of the Long-Term and Expanded Programme of the Ocean. The first activity was the compilation of the Geological and Geophysical Atlas of the Indian Ocean taking advantage of the data collected through the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE). This atlas was published in 1975 by the Academy of Sciences and the Main Administration of Geodesy and Cartography of the forrner USSR.

The Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre (MEMAC) was established on 4th August 1982 at Manama - Bahrain within the framework of Kuwait Regional Convention for Co-operation on the protection of the Marine Environment from Pollution together with the Protocol concerning co-operation in combating pollution by oil & other harmful substances in cases of emergency which were signed on 24th April 1978 at Kuwait .

Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) top


In order to implement the Kuwait Regional Convention, its Protocol, and the Kuwait Action Plan, the Regional Organisation for the Protection of Marine Environment - ROPME, as defined in Article XIV of the convention , was established on 1 July 1979 upon deposit of instruments of ratification by five Contracting States in accordance with paragraph (a) of Article XXVIII of the convention. The programmes and activities of ROPME were carried out by the UNEP Interim Secretariat until the establishment of ROPME Secretariat on 1 January 1982 as per the agreement between ROPME and the Government of the State of Kuwait - 17 November 1981.
