Biodiversity: Importance | Facts | Impacts | Response | Recap

Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems, and the ecological complexes of which they are part. This includes within species (genetic diversity), between species and of ecosystems (UNEP-GEO3, 2002).

In this section we will:

■   Look at why biodiversity is important.
■   Present some of the facts about biodiversity.
■   Identify some of the potential impacts the industry can have on biodiversity.
■   Describe the international, government and industry response to this issue.

The importance of biodiversity

The planet Earth is losing it's biodiversity at the fastest rate it has ever experienced. Do we have any obligation and/or ability to slow down or stop this loss?
