Climate Change and Biological Diversity: Cooperation between the
Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change
http://www.biodiv.org/climate-change/index.html
Climate change is one of the threats to biodiversity, and the
need for its rate to be reduced to allow ecosystems to adjust to
climate change is recognized in the objective of the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Measures such as
the conservation and sustainable management of forests and other
ecosystems can contribute simultaneously to both the UNFCCC and the
Convention on Biological Diversity.

Change
http://www.cnie.org/nle/clim-2.html
The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) works
to improve the scientific basis for environmental decision-making.
Guided by the needs of stakeholders, NCSE educates society about
the importance of comprehensive scientific programs that integrate
cross-cutting research with knowledge assessments, education, information
dissemination, and training. NCSE Objectives include : bringing
about the full implementation of the recommendations of the National
Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) report "Environmental Science
and Engineering for the 21st Century: The Role of the National Science
Foundation"; facilitating stakeholder actions to develop a
shared understanding of science, science needs and priorities, and
efforts to link science with decision-making; providing and creating
an online information dissemination system that allows all users
to find understandable, science-based information about the environment.

http://www.climatenetwork.org/
The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of over 287
Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working to promote government
and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically
sustainable levels. CAN members work to achieve this goal through
the coordination of information exchange and NGO strategy on international,
regional and national climate issues. CAN has seven regional coordinating
offices which co-ordinate these efforts in Africa, Central and Eastern
Europe, Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia, and Southeast
Asia. Diverse environmental organizations from around the globe,
ranging from large international groups such as World Wildlife Fund
(WWF), Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, to small local groups
in developing countries such as Terre Vivante in Mauritania and
the Green Coalition in the Philippines, work collaboratively within
CAN.

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI)
is the international environmental agency for local governments.
Its mission is to build and serve a worldwide movement of local
governments to achieve tangible improvements in global environmental
and sustainable development conditions through cumulative local
actions. Building a worldwide movement requires that ICLEI functions
as a democratic, international association of local governments.

The genesis of these activities lay in TERI’s firm belief that efficient
utilization of energy, sustainable use of natural resources, large-scale
adoption of renewable energy technologies, and reduction of all
forms of waste would move the process of development towards the

Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS)
http://www.ucsusa.org/
UCS was founded in 1969 by faculty members and students at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology who were concerned about the
misuse of science and technology in society. From that beginning,
UCS collaborates with colleagues across the country to conduct technical
studies on renewable energy options, the impacts of global warming,
the risks of genetically engineered crops, and other related topics.
UCS share the results of our research with policymakers, the news
media, and the public. UCS experts work together with citizens across
the country to disseminate its findings and alter policies in local
communities as well as on the national level. Through UCS Sound
Science Initiative, 2,000 scientists provide the real facts on environmental
science to government and the media. Knowing the immensity of the
challenge, UCS actively works in coalition with other environmental
groups that share its goals. The UCS works to ensure that all people
have clean air and energy, as well as safe and sufficient food.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
http://www.unfccc.int/text/index.html
ARTICLE 2 OBJECTIVE: The ultimate objective of this Convention
and any related legal instruments that the Conference of the Parties
may adopt is to achieve, in accordance with the relevant provisions
of the Convention, stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations
in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic
interference with the climate system. Such a level should be achieved
within a time-frame sufficient to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally
to climate change, to ensure that food production is not threatened
and to enable economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner.
